Pijamada

  • Mamá: Tu hermana hará una pijamada con sus amigas...
  • Yo: Ahhjjj...
  • Mamá: Ay, ¿y tú cuándo eras chico e invitabas a tus amigos a la casa?, ¿quién te decía algo?
  • Yo: Bueno, en ese tiempo no tenía hermana.

Mike And The Censations - There Is Nothing I Can Do About It - Highland Records

Mike Kirkland is well known amongst soul and funk collectors for his solo releases in the 70’s but in my opinion his best stuff was The Censations records on Highland.

Mike was born int he 40’s in Mississipi and sang in a gospel group with his brothers called The Seven Seals. Seems to me an upbringing like that almost always the story for any great soul singer from the 60’s and 70’s. Eventually the family moved to Los Angeles and by 1965 Mike And The Censations released their first single “Victim Of Cirumstance” on his brother Robert’s record label Bryan Records.

The single hit the top 50 on the RnB charts and set things in motion. The group released a handful of 45’s that are all wonderful recordings and in the early 70’s Mike began releasing solo material while still working with his brother.

Mike changed his name to Bo Kirkland to avoid confusion with Michael Jackson when Michael began his solo career.  He teamed up with ex-ikette Ruth Davis and released some fine material on the Claridge Record label which I may post up in the future. Mike Kirkland is another one of those artists who just consistently put out quality material and it’s all worth checking out.

Today’s tune was the groups second single and one of my favorites by them. The flip side is a nice dancy tune, but this here is a real slow and low one and starts out like a punch in the gut followed by a piece of cake. The man had a great voice and the group backs him up just perfectly. I don’t have anything else to say. A great record.
